Wildfires, decades of herbicide spraying along roads running through reserve lands, and the cumulative pressures of land disturbance have stripped Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation of berry patches, traditional medicines, and the trees that once canopied family homes. The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Rewilding Program is Project Forest’s long-term commitment to restoring what was lost; ecologically, culturally, and spiritually.

The species chosen for this program are not only ecologically appropriate, they are culturally significant. Saskatoon, buffalo berry, and gooseberry bring residents back to a time when children could fill buckets with berries across the townsite. Fruit trees planted at the school give youth the experience of growing food and caring for land. Trees placed in the yards of wildfire survivors offer shade, solace, and a living symbol of recovery. Every seedling in this program carries a story.
