As COP 16 unfolds in Colombia, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Leaders from 196 countries are gathering to turn promises from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) into real action. And at Project Forest, we’re watching closely. The reason? Biodiversity is in crisis, and forests—particularly those in Canada—are a critical piece of the puzzle.

The Challenge: A Declining Biodiversity Crisis

Biodiversity—the variety of life on Earth—is shrinking faster than at any point in human history. In Canada alone, thousands of species, including iconic animals like the caribou and monarch butterfly, are on the brink of extinction. Over 300 species are found only in Canada, yet many are under threat from habitat destruction and climate change (Biodiversity in Canada: Commitments and Trends). Canada’s forests are especially significant. The country holds 24% of the world’s boreal forests and 25% of temperate forests (Biodiversity in Canada: Commitments and Trends). These forests not only store massive amounts of carbon but also support unique ecosystems and wildlife. When we lose forests, we’re not just losing trees—we’re losing entire ecosystems that many species rely on for survival.

Why It Matters to You

At Project Forest, we know that protecting Canada’s forests means safeguarding biodiversity. But with such a huge problem, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. You might ask yourself, “How can I make a difference?” The truth is you can, and you don’t have to take on this challenge alone.

How We’re Taking Action

Project Forest has partnered with First Nations, conservation groups, and universities to restore biodiversity in Canadian forests. To date, we’ve planted 36 unique species, helping to rewild ecosystems that have been damaged by human activity. These efforts directly contribute to reversing biodiversity loss in critical areas. Protecting forests means protecting the species that call them home (Biodiversity in Canada: Commitments and Trends).

Be Part of the Solution

Together, we can tackle the biodiversity crisis one step at a time. Project Forest is making a difference with our community of land and funding partners, and you can too. Whether by supporting rewilding projects or raising awareness, every action counts.
