Located west of Edmonton, the Wagner Natural Area is a unique protected natural space, known for its ecological diversity and rare groundwater-fed fens. This 251-hectare area is home to a wide variety of habitats, ranging from willow swamps and mixed forests to calcareous fens, marl ponds, and creeks.
Wagner Natural Area is renowned for its remarkable orchid population; 16 of Alberta’s 24 native species can be found here. These rare and delicate flowers are a celebrated feature of the site and draw enthusiasts who travel specifically to see them.
As part of our rewilding work, Project Forest is helping restore sections of previously cleared agricultural land within the Wagner Natural Area. This project is made possible through the support of our land and funding partners, Keyera and the Government of Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program.

The Wagner Natural Area rewilding project aims to restore a highly sensitive and ecologically significant landscape. By planting a diverse mix of native tree and shrub species, the project will help re-establish natural forest cover, support the area’s rare wetland ecosystems, and improve habitat for local wildlife.
